Irby Hall

Irby Hall, on the site of an ancient manor house of Chester Abbey, is early 17th century, with some reconstruction in 1888.

A high earth bank - just visible to the left - and the remains of a deep moat are reminders of times when marauding Welshmen were slightly more of a problem than they are today. Recent excavations nearby in Irby have uncovered the remains of a settlement dating from Iron Age and Roman times.

There are stories of an underground tunnel leading to Thurstaston so as the early occupants could escape via the River Dee should there be a need.

    1. My Uncle, Norman Morrison and cousin lived, Ian lived there but not sure of the dates. I left England in the 50's and lost contact with the family. I think they may have been there late 70's early 80's. Would love to hear back from you. David Selby. Vancouver, B.C.

  2. I used to live here in the early 80's. Don't remember much about the inside but I remember my Dad (Ian Morrison) having a De Havilland Vampire T-11 Military Trainer in the back. No idea if its still their or not. But I have fond memories of playing in it.

    1. Hello Lionel. Louise Selby, Vancouver, Canada. My husband David and I are doing our family tree. His Dad's name was Gordon with a sister Marjory and older brother Raymond who went to Australia about 1928. Marjory married Norman Morrison and had a daughter Doreen in 1935 and a son Ian, 1939. Another 'new' relative from Seattle sent us this site about Irby Hall. Seeing your blog made us think you may be a relative. If so, your great grandparents would be Arthur Ernest Selby and Harriet (nee Hey). Would love to hear back from you. Thanks
